Abstract
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is one of the glycoproteins of the serum and being to be synthesized at yolk sac, liver, gastrointestinal tract, kidney and placenta four to eight weeks after gestation. But in adults, it remains less than 23 ng/ml in serum. In certain malignancies, AFP reappears in the serum. By immunoperoxidase histochemical staining of the formali[n-fixed and paraffin embedded sections, the production of alpha fetoprotein was examined in forty-five cases of germ cell tumors. Thirteen of twenty-three cases of choriocarcinoma showed alpha-fetoprotein in the cytoplasm.¢¥ Embryonal carcinoma, adult type, showed alpha-fetoprotein in their¢¥ cytoplasms in seven out of eight cases. All three cases of yolk sac tumor showed cytoplasmic alpha-fetoprotein: Two cases of dysgerminoma, two of malignant teratoma and eight of semin.oma were all negative for alpha-fetoprotein.
